Ryan Cilia

Assistant Environmental Monitor

Ryan Cilia, Assistant Environmental Monitor, is one of the new additions to the company, joining in May 2017.

Ryan has a Bachelor degree in Earth Systems and a dual Master degree in Environmental Management and Sustainability and in Integrated Science and Technology from the University of Malta and James Madison University, Virginia, respectively. For his undergraduate dissertation he studied the possible impacts from an anthropogenic point of view and other natural pressures resulting in the added vulnerability to the Maltese Painted frog . As part of his Master thesis, he conducted an extensive study on the ecological, historical and touristic aspect of the area of Ta’ Cenc in Sannat, Gozo and devised a plan for the creation of a natural heritage park.

He has also worked on several other environmental management and monitoring projects. These included two overseas projects – one in Iceland, involving a study of different geological features, tectonic activity and climate, including ecological surveys on the different flora and fauna present, and one in Maremma Natural Park in Tuscany, Italy where anthropogenic impacts on the Natural Park were assessed.

Ryan assisted in ecological surveys , mainly at Buskett, Tal-Wej (Mosta), Chadwick Lakes, and Ta’ Cenc, Gozo. Other minor projects included Ramla l-Hamra and the adjacent valley, and Ghajn Tuffieha where a study of the ecology of the area as a Natura 2000 site was carried out.

In addition to his studies, Ryan undertook additional courses at the University of Malta on marine biology, fisheries and central Mediterranean biodiversity, with a special interest in the Maltese islands. He was also part of the students’ organisation within the Institute of Earth Systems during his undergraduate degree.

Within En-Sure, Ryan is mainly responsible for environmental monitoring consisting of site surveys, noise and vibration monitoring and air quality monitoring, carried out at a variety of different construction projects, including dredging activities within the Grand Harbour, the construction of the Kappara junction, Birzebbuga (Freeport), Gzira, Marsa and Sliema amongst others. He is also involved in traffic count surveys together with eco-certification audits.

Since joining the team, Ryan has undergone training with regards to noise and vibration monitoring and air quality sampling techniques and equipment.

Ryan is fluent in Maltese, English and Italian and has a basic knowledge of the German language. He also has a strong knowledge of Data Basis, the World Wide Web, Java coding, SketchUp 2017, Geographic information Systems (mainly ArcMap and ArcGIS online), and a good command of Microsoft Office tools which were acquired though his additional Creative Computing Diploma and university-level degrees.

His passion for the environment has led Ryan to be actively involved in environmental NGOs contributing to afforestation projects by growing native trees to be donated for these causes. He helps in the administration of these NGOs, especially in the technical planning phases and liaising between other organisations and volunteers. Ryan also has a keen interest in theoretical physics and astrophysics, fish keeping and also enjoys hiking, camping and travelling.
