The objective of the investigation was to locate any debris and artefacts that may be buried within the seabed in Marsaxlokk Bay prior to any development taking place. The development mainly consists of the extension of the Malta Freeport Terminal One and dredging of the fairway and berth quay.
For this purpose, a sub-bottom profile survey was carried out in the area of the proposed channel expansion in the harbour at Malta Freeport. Sub-consultants were entrusted to carry out the survey.
Basic bathymetric data was extracted from the seabed reflection from the sub-bottom survey. The depths were extracted from the seismic data and adjusted accordingly.
The seismic records were visually inspected to obtain an impression of the sub bottom character. Any anomalies within the soft sediments were identified and numbered. The depth below bed was measured and the lateral extent along the profile estimated. These data were entered into a spreadsheet together with co-ordinates.
The survey achieved its main objective, that of detecting and mapping the distribution of potential buried artefacts and the sediments.
The study concluded by providing a number of recommendations to be considered during dredging operations.
