Environmental Monitoring during dredging works at the MFT, Birzebbuga
An Environmental Monitoring Programme is currently being followed to assess the impacts during and after the upgrading of the Malta Freeport Terminals at Kalafrana. The Project consists of capital dredging to widen the existing fairway and to increase the size of the vessel turning circles, and an extension of both Terminal One and Terminal Two to provide more and larger berthing spaces, thereby increasing the turnaround of vessels at the Terminals.
The monitoring programme ensures the implementation of the mitigation measures set out in the development permit, and monitors the potential impacts on the marine environment throughout the construction.
The following aspects are being monitored:
- Noise and vibration;
- Posidonia and benthic infauna;
- Benthic assemblages;
- Water and sediment quality;
- Sediment profile;
- Archaeology; and
- Dredging works.
