Project Title: Land and groundwater risk assessment for pharmaceutical plant

Start / Finish Dates:  October – December 2015

En-Sure was commissioned to carry out a land and groundwater risk assessment for a pharmaceutical facility in Ħal Far.  The risk assessment was requested by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) as part of the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permit for the facility.

In accordance with European Commission and MEPA guidance, the assessment was carried out to establish whether baseline land / groundwater measurements would be required.  Such assessments are necessary when the activity involves the use, production or release of relevant hazardous substances, and need to take into account the possibility of soil and groundwater contamination by the facility.  The risk assessment therefore considered the current mitigation scenario, as well as the additional planned mitigation measures that the facility will put in place to reduce the risk of land and groundwater contamination further.
