Land monitoring (2)

Project Title: Land contamination study for a proposed WEEE recycling plant in Hal Far

Start / Finish Dates:  October 2016 – February 2017

Following the preparation of an Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permit application for the proposed facility, which included a land and groundwater risk assessment, the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) determined that a baseline ground monitoring study was to be carried out.

En-Sure conducted a land monitoring survey and waste characterization assessment for the site.  The project included preparing a Method Statement for ERA’s approval, land sampling, and analysis at an accredited laboratory.  The principal aim of the analytical programme was to assess baseline levels of pollutants, to enable a quantified comparison to be made with the contamination levels upon decommissioning.  A secondary aim was to determine whether the rock to be excavated during construction works is to be considered hazardous, non hazardous or inert, to enable identification of the appropriate waste disposal / recovery route.  A hazardous property assessment was therefore conducted on the results to confirm the nature of the waste.
