This project was the subject of an Appropriate Assessment (AA), which was required to determine the impact of the development on the adjacent Il-Hofra saline marshland – a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) forming part of the Natura 2000 network. Accordingly, the aim of the monitoring excercise is to monitor the impact of the construction works on the ecology of the surrounding areas. In particular, the monitoring is designed to address the impact on the water quality of the saline marshland and the impact of construction noise on local and migratory birds. The monitoring team also regularly advises the project management team on how to mitigate the impact of the works to reduce disturbance in nearby residential localities and on the public roads.
