Project Title: IPPC application for waste electronics processing plant

Start / Finish Dates:  March – December 2015

The proposed facility comprises an industrial unit for the recycling and treatment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) as well as shredding and gasification of wood.  The applicant intends to relocate, expand and upgrade his current operations from his current location in an industrial site in Żabbar to the site, which is located in the Ħal Far Industrial Estate.

The IPPC application included a detailed description of the proposal, including an assessment of how the facility complies with Best Available Technique (BAT) as defined in several BAT reference documents, and mitigation measures to reduce environmental impacts from the WEEE treatment process, particularly with regard to air emissions and surface water management.  A noise survey was also carried out in order to establish the facility’s potential impacts on the nearest sensitive receptors.

The Application also included a land and groundwater risk assessment, providing details of the history of the site and assessing the risk of land and groundwater contamination from the proposal.  This step is required by the Industrial Emissions (IPPC) Regulations and European Commission guidance in order to determine whether baseline land and groundwater monitoring is required.

En-Sure’s service also included archaeological monitoring during site clearance works.
