Construction & Demolition Waste Strategy for Malta

The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) recently published a waste strategy for construction and demolition (C&D) waste. In Malta, over 1.5 million tonnes of C&D waste is generated each year, comprising around 80% of the total waste generated nationally.

The C&D Waste Strategy covers the period 2021-2030, and includes 15 measures with associated timeframes for implementation.

New BAT standards for waste management plants

The European Union has published Implementing Decision 2018/1147, which updates the Best Available Technique (BAT) conclusions for certain large waste management plants.  These BAT standards apply to the waste treatment facilities that require an Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permit, such as certain sites processing or storing hazardous waste. European Commission publishes stricter standards for large combustion plants

The European Commission has published Decision 2017/1442 which sets stricter standards for large combustion plants in accordance with the requirements of the Industrial Emissions Directive.  This Directive stipulates that such plants must operate in accordance with Best Available Technique.

BAT conclusions on pig & poultry published

The European Union has published Implementing Decision 2017/302 to establish best available techniques (BAT) conclusions for the intensive rearing of poultry or pigs under the Industrial Emissions Directive.

The conclusions apply to farms carrying out intensive rearing of poultry or pigs and having more than 40,000 places for poultry, 2,000 places for production pigs (over 30 kg), or 750 places for sows. Read more..

En-Sure archaeologists unearth ancient wall in Valletta Ditch

En-Sure’s archaeology team is responsible for monitoring all the works being undertaken in Valletta in connection with the development at the Triton Fountain. A critical part of En-Sure’s work is to constantly monitor all the works so that if any features of archaeological importance are discovered, works are stopped and the appropriate action is taken to record and, where relevant, preserve these features. The European Commission recently published a Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Protocol. The Protocol sets out non-binding guidelines on the proper management of C&D waste, and aims to improve confidence in the C&D waste management process, and trust in the quality of recycled materials from this industry. En-Sure offsets its carbon emissions

En-Sure recently offset its calculated carbon emissions for 2016 by making a donation to Pure Leapfrog. Pure Leapfrog is a UK-based charity that funds carbon-reducing projects all round the globe. This initiative was taken as part of En-Sure’s Environmental Management System, which in 2016 achieved ISO 14001 certification. Read more..

Archaeological finds at the Augustinian Priory, Valletta

Interesting archaeological finds made by En-Sure’s archaeologists were recently featured in the local press.

En-Sure was engaged by the Fondazzjoni Socjo-Kulturali Ambjentali Agustinjana (FSKAA) to conduct exploratory archaeological monitoring at the Augustinian Priory in Valletta. This monitoring was required as part of the evaluation process for an Interpretation Centre proposed by the FSKAA. Read more..
